Automatic knives or switchblade knives have been around for almost over a hundred years now and from their very inception, it was clear that they will definitely stand the test of time. Their rise to fame happened with the Law enforcement, Military Personnel and Emergency Medical Technicians. However, they were explored by many other professions as well such as Fisherman who used these almost exclusively for day-to-day activity of tending their nets from snags, minimizing the damage and financial losses. The Italian stiletto switchblades enjoyed a huge popularity when the US Military realized their potential and issued them for the soldiers, especially for the purpose of cutting shroud lines on parachutes in case of tree landings or hang-ups. But the fact is that thanks to its immense popularity, it also has its fair share of myths circling around us. This is exactly what this post will be addressing to. Read on as I will be listing all of these myths and the actual facts behind them. So, let’s get started.
Automatic Knives – Explore the Myth and Facts!
Switchblade knives have become one of the most “collectable” items or Curios. One of the main reasons behind their soaring popularity is that currently more and more states are removing the legal limitations on these items. There are some states like Arizona or Florida that allow people to carry these knives whilst other states limit them to being collectibles only. Although, there are still some myths about these knives, that needs to be revised. So, let’s look at them one by one.
Myth:
The first and the most significant myth is that according to The Federal Switchblade Act Of 1958 (FSA), all automatic knives are banned.
Fact:
The fact is that FSA does not actually inhibit or restrict your ability to carry an automatic knife in any way. The act only prohibits the manufacturers and vendors from commercially selling automatic knives across state lines. Also, the US Customs Service applies the Act to prevent the importation of these knives and its parts from other countries.
Myth:
The second myth that has been around for a while now is that individuals can not own or carry an automatic knife unless they are law enforcement officers or military.
Fact:
The actual fact is that the FSA does not inhibit or restrict your ability to carry an automatic knife in any way. This is due to the absence of any federal restriction on the possession of an automatic knife. Different states have the right to establish their own laws about these knives. Currently, any individual can own and carry an automatic knife in 43 states, although a few selected states have restrictions such as blade length. Also there are several states who are currently discussing bills to allow these knives or remove restrictions.
Myth:
There is a myth that The Federal Switchblade Act prohibits sending automatic knives to individuals in other states or within your state.
Fact:
Whereas the fact is, The FSA only prohibits you to send automatic knives through the postal service. The act does not give any restrictions on shipping knives using the other carrier services as long as it is not being sold across a state line.
Myth:
Last but not the least, one of the most-heard myths about the automatic knives is that they are a very dangerous weapon used in many crimes.
Fact:
To say the fact clearly, automatic knives are a very valuable tool in many situations where it is difficult to use two hands to open the knife. According to a study completed in 2015, researchers found that there was no evidence in states that showed involvement of automatic knives in crimes like murder, robbery or aggravated assault. And the ratio of incident also didn’t increase compared to periods before and after automatic knives were illegal and then legal.
In a Nutshell:
I believe with the above discussion you now know the myths that are not completely true anyway. So what else would you like to know about automatic knives? Mention them in the comments section and I will be addressing them in the future posts. Also, tell us your experience with these knives and it will be very beneficial for the other readers. Till then share this with your social peers and keep following this space.
